Breast Reduction in Michigan
What is breast reduction?
Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery designed to reduce the size of large breasts and make the body more proportionate. In cases where the size of the bust is negatively impacting a woman's physical health, psychological happiness, or self-esteem, breast reduction is a viable option.
The surgery itself is comprised of several steps. First, an incision is made to allow the surgeon access to underlying tissue. These incisions usually run vertically along the lower half of the breast and circle the areola. They may also run along the bottom edge of the breast. Excess tissue is removed and ligaments are tightened in order to reduce breast size and raise the breast. Then the nipple-areola complex is placed higher upon the breast. The incisions are sutured closed. Typically these sites heal with a minimum of scarring given enough recovery time.
Recovery following surgery will vary depending on the extent of the procedure performed. In many cases the patient is able to go home the same day, though sometimes they are kept in the hospital for a day afterward. A supportive garment is required for the first few weeks, and normal activities can be resumed after a week or two. Your surgeon will provide specific instructions regarding aftercare.
What can breast reduction help correct?
Many health issues can be associated with overly large breasts. Pain in the head, neck, and shoulders are all common symptoms, but an enlarged bust has also been tied to poor circulation and even difficulty breathing. Beyond the physical consequences lie the mental; in many cases the woman suffers from a poor self-image and is extremely self-conscious about her figure. Breast reduction surgery can relieve all of these issues. It will provide physical relief in the form of lessened pain, and it will improve the proportions and self-confidence of the patient. This surgery can also correct the natural sag that often occurs with very large breasts.
Who is a candidate for breast reduction?
Anyone suffering from the physical or mental consequences of having large, pendulous breasts is a good candidate for this procedure. Where there is back or shoulder pain having a breast reduction will provide relief. Where there is self-consciousness or embarrassment this procedure will also be enormously beneficial.
The best candidates for cosmetic surgery are in good physical health and do not smoke. Having realistic expectation and a positive attitude is also important. Have an open dialog with your surgeon regarding what to expect before, during, and after surgery to ensure the best possible experience.
